EVENTS
UOG Colloquium with Dr. Nicolas Mirzoeff on “MODERNITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE” – Aug. 25
Nicholas Mirzoeff is Professor in the Department of Media, Culture and Communication at NYU. His publications include An Introduction to Visual Culture (2nd ed. 2009), Watching Babylon: The War In Iraq and Global Visual Culture (2005) and The Visual Culture Reader (2002). In 2010 he was a NEH Summer Fellow in "Broadening the Digital Humanities." The event will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2010 from 3-5PM in AV Room 1, RFK Library.

Fall Semester Tuition Deadline – August 26

All students must pay their tuition and fees or sign up for the Time Option Payment Plan by 12 noon on August 26, 2010.

Student Government Association 2010 Gubernatorial Forum – Aug. 24
The 48th Student Government Association Gubernatorial Forum will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 6:00pm at the CLASS Lecture Hall. No entrance fee, open to all UOG students and the public.

Limited Number Complimentary Tickets to the Primary Great Debate Available to UOG Full-time Employees
The UOG Endowment Foundation is offering tickets to UOG Full-time employees on a first come, first served basis. There are 100 tickets available. The tickets may be picked up from Tommy at the Endowment Foundation Office, House #10, Dean’s Circle. No deliveries, no holding tickets at the door, no reserving tickets by phone. If you want a free ticket, bring your check stub (to prove that you are an employee as Tommy doesn’t know everyone) to the Endowment Foundation Office.



The Primary Great Debate will be held on September 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the UOG Field House. If you would rather buy a ticket, they are on sale now for $15.00 each at all Circle K/76 gas stations or the UOG Endowment Foundation. Conference on Island Sustainability – Sept. 2 and 3
Deadline to Register: Aug. 27

The University of Guam will host a Conference on Island Sustainability for Guam and Micronesia on September 2-3, 2010 at the Guam Marriott. This will mark the first formal event sponsored by the new Center for Island Sustainability. Read more at www.uog.edu/islandsustainability
SGA Inauguration – Sept. 2
The Student Government Association will host their inauguration of officers on September 2 at the Guam Legislature beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Guam Ballet Company's Full Length Ballet, “Sirena”

SCHOLARSHIPS

JARS Scholarship Available
Deadline to Apply: Nov. 30
The JARS Scholarship is a $500 private scholarship available to juniors or seniors enrolled fulltime at the University of Guam who are pursuing a major in Fine Arts. The application deadline is November 30, 2010. Visit www.uog.edu/scholarships for more information.
Parsons Scholarship for Pre-Engineering Students
Deadline to apply: August 24, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.
University of Guam pre-engineering students who have completed ES201 Engineering Statistics or who are enrolled in the course for the Fall 2010 semester are encouraged to apply for a Parsons scholarship. For more information visit www.uog.edu/scholarships
Upward Bound Seeks Participants
UOG's Upward Bound (UB) college prep program is currently accepting applications from interested high school students who are college bound. Free academic support services are provided such as tutoring, college prep and career prep activities, summer classes for credit, test preparation, and more! Students attending GW, JFK, SHS, and SSHS may apply if they are currently in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. Students must meet eligibility requirements to be accepted. Applications are available at each of the schools Counseling Offices and at the UB Office, UOG Dorm I, during regular work hours. A UB Open House & Info Meeting for interested students and parents is scheduled for Aug. 28th at the UOG Cafeteria. Call 735-1992/ 2245 for more information regarding applications or the meeting.

Procurement Technical Assistance Center Workshop
The Guam Procurement Technical Assistance Center provides services needed to ensure that Guam Small Businesses are competitive in the local and federal marketplace. The center is staffed with trained professionals in business and government and is hosted by the University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration. The Guam PTAC offers the following series of workshop:

Where: UOG School of Business & Public Administration Bldg. Room 129
Cost: $20.00

This is your opportunity to learn how the Government solicits for supplies and services and the differences between the types of notices posted. The Federal Business Opportunities or FEDBIZOPPS website is the Government wide point of entry (GPE) where Government business opportunities greater than 25,000.00 can be accessed electronically by the public. Guam PTAC will provide an overview of FEDBIZOPPS.

In this seminar, you will assess your current operations and plan for expanding, standardizing, and measuring them to ensure that your products and services are not delayed or distorted on their way out into the world. We will discuss systems, processes, procedures, policies, standards, and measurements that will keep you from worrying about things that should be routine and efficient in your business.

The CHamoru Language Program will host a gubernatorial debate in the indigenous language on Oct. 25 in the CLASS lecture hall.



PARTNERSHIPS

UOG and Guangxi Institute of Fisheries Collaborate on Selective Shrimp Breeding
In 2008, the University of Guam College of Natural and Applied Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Guangxi Institute of Fisheries (GXIF) to collaborate on research regarding a shrimp selective breeding program. In July a group from Guangxi Institute of Fisheries visited the University of Guam to meet President Robert A. Underwood, Lee Yudin, Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Board of Regents member Andrew Laguana, and other administrators and faculty members.
