Colloquium with Dr. Carlyle Corbin, Political Self-Determination Expert – Nov. 30

Dr. Corbin will present, "Recent Developments in Small Island Governance: Implications for the Self-Determination Process" on November 30 at 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS Lecture Hall. Dr. Corbin is a United Nations advisor and expert on political self-determination. The event is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the University of Guam ’s Division of Social Work and the Guahan Coalition for Peace and Justice.

Go Green Guam Recruitment and Awareness Drive – Dec. 1
The UOG Green interns will be recruiting new members to the green movement on December 1 10:30 -2:30 in the student center rotunda. Encourage your students to attend and become a part of the Green Army!

Joint Student Recital – Dec. 1
On December 1 at 7:00pm the UOG Music Students will perform their Joint Student Recital at the UOG Fine Arts Theater. The performance is free.

Professional MBA Information Sessions – Dec. 3
Find out about the Professional MBA program on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm in the IT&E Lecture Hall, School of Business and Public Administration. Classes begin June 3, 2011.

The United States Secret Service Virtual Info Session at UOG – Dec. 1 and Dec. 10
The University of Guam Career Development Office will host a virtual information session and employer presentation by the United States Secret Service (USSS) on the UOG campus on December 1 and December 10, 2010. The United States Secret Service is looking to fill positions for special agent, uniformed division officer, special officer, administrative, and professional and technical support positions. Representatives from the US Secret Service will conduct the session and explain the mission, career, and employment process. The sessions will be held on the following dates:

· Wednesday, December 01, 2010- 10:00am-12noon- and 2:00 pm to 4: 00pm

University of Guam Cancer Research Center and Cancer Research Center of Hawaii Present a Community Research Update - Dec. 2
The UOG Cancer Research Center and the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii will present updates on various research projects on Dec. 2 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the CLASS lecture hall. Project updates include the Cancer Registry; the Development of Protocols for Studying Oral Precancerous Lesions and Other Health Risks Among Betel Nut Users in Micronesia; Development of a Breast Cancer Risk Model of the Pacific; Community Outreach to Reduce Health Disparities (Youth Tobacco Use) Among Pacific Islanders Living in Guam; and an overview and update on the Cancer Center partnership between UOG and the University of Hawaii. This event is funded by a National Institutes of Health Cancer Institute Grant.

University Music presents “Winter Wonderland” - Dec. 2 and 3
University Music will present “Winter Wonderland” Family Holiday Concerts on December 2-3 at 7:00pm at the UOG Fine Arts Theater. The University Singers and the UOG Jazz Ensemble will perform holiday favorites. The concerts will be visited by Frosty the Snowman, the Grinch and Santa himself! Admission is $7.00 adult and $5.00 for children and students. UOG students are free with UOG student ID card. On Thursday night, December 2, the whole family can get in for $20!

Career Majors and Minors Fair – Dec. 3

The Career Majors and Minors Fair is scheduled on Friday, December 3, 2010, from 9 am to 6:00 p.m. at the UOG Field House. This event is open to all UOG undergraduates, undeclared majors, and high school seniors. The colleges and schools will feature their various programs.



REVITALIZING THE HEART OF GUAM – Dec. 3

Biofeedback for Gamers – Dec. 6
Dr. Dorcia Tucker is a Navy psychologist who specializes in bio-feedback. She will present during a College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Colloquium on December 6 at 4:00 p.m. to demonstrate how biofeedback works to reduce stress, anxiety and other psychological problems. “Biofeedback for Gamers" will be held in College Professional Development Room, Dean’s Office, HSS 3rd Floor

TEACH GRANT AND YEC INFO SESSION – Dec. 7
The School of Education and the Financial Aid Office host an information session both the TEACH grant program and the YEC program and how residents may use these grants to fund their educations as they pursue their teaching degrees.

UOG PCEI LAUNCHES CONSUMER CONFIDENCE SURVEY – Take it by Dec. 18
The University of Guam-Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives (UOG-PCEI) is conducting its fourth semi-annual survey to find out how Guam consumers assess current and future business and economic climate on Guam . Voluntary participation is appreciated. You will be asked to complete one survey instrument and will take approximately 5 minutes. The consumer survey consists of 11 questions. Questions are rated on a Likert Scale. In addition, you will be asked questions pertaining to gender, age, ethnicity, household income, household size, and employment. This survey is part of a series of projects designed to begin and maintain updated and reliable data that will be useful for planning by policymakers, businesses and the local community. Planetarium Shows – Dec. 9, 10 and 11
So join us on 9, 10 and 11 December at 6:30 p.m. when we'll present "Sky Legends of the World 18", the show where little kids tell us stories about the sky. Plan to stay for the 7:00 p.m. show where you'll hear the greatest story ever told. Every December we have "The Star," the Planetarium Christmas show. "The Star" is a look at what scientists think the Star of Bethlehem might have been. The show begins with a reading of the Christmas story. Don't miss this wonderful show!!

Business Woman of the Year Scholarships

Roselyn Carino, Suzanne Bernardo, Lisiel Ignacio, and Eileen Calleja received scholarships ranging $2,280 to $2,850 from First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Magazine on Nov. 26. Funds for the scholarships were raised during the annual Business Woman of the Year event.



FACULTY IN ACTION

Dr. Mary Fegurgur
Dr. Mary Fegurgur, Principal Investigator for Guam’s Family Support 360 for Military Families Project, which is one of the Administration on Developmental Disabilities initial four projects funded to serve military families who have children with disabilities was recently asked to lead a national “360 Exchange” webinar on September 23. This 360 Exchange Webinar included the development of a presentation and overview of outcome research currently being conducted on Guam in the area of Military Family Supports. Project staff from around the nation, families, and federal officials called in and logged on to be able to view slides and learn from how Guam’s 360 has utilized the Parent Stress Index as a tool for assessing baseline, for identifying areas to be included in family support plans, and to measure impact and outcomes of the project.

UOG Alumni Update - November 22

TODAY’S EVENTS

“ONE - The Movie” – Nov. 22
The University of Guam ’s Sociology of Religion Class will host a free screening of the internationally acclaimed and award winning documentary film, "ONE - The Movie" on November 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS lecture hall. Dr. Kirk Johnson, professor of sociology at the University of Guam , tasked his students this semester to consider what they might do as students studying religion and society for the Guam community. They decided to screen a film that captures humanity's journey throughout the ages. The film ONE is a documentary that was created to increase awareness of the interconnectedness of all people and cultures around the world. The screening, which coincides with the celebrations of the 10th Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Guam , is free of charge and open to the public.

STUDENTS IN ACTION



Nursing Students and graduates participate in Homeless Outreach
On Nov. 17, student nurses assisted in providing immunizations and registration for the homeless during the Passport to Health and Employment Services outreach held in conjunction with the opening of The People’s Garden by the First Lady and the HOPE Foundation. Nursing students also went out to the unsheltered homeless in Hagatna and Tamuning. The students, along with Margaret Hattori and several GMH nurses who are UOG graduates, visited homeless and provided shoes and clothing.

Sociology Students Wash Cars for Habitat for Humanity
On Nov. 20 Sociology students held a car wash fundraiser in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Criminal Justice Students Win Co-Ed Division in Inafamaolek Bed Race
JJ Construction and Joey Lopez sponsored UOG Criminal Justice majors who won first place in the co-ed division in a charity event for Inafamaolek.

Vega Deputy U.S. Marshal
John Vega a May 2010 UOG graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice was sworn in as a Deputy US Marshal on Nov. 9.

SBPA volunteered to serve as a drop off site for the “Toys for Tots” program
Marine Forces Pacific (Fwd) Guam & CNMI is organizing a Toys for Tots campaign to help the children of Guam and CNMI. The School of Business and Public Administration is an official drop off center. To participate you can drop a new, unwrapped toy in the collection box located in the SBPA Dean’s Office. The campaign lasts until December 22 when toys will be distributed to children. MarForPac (Fwd) is working with Catholic Social Services, Alee Shelter, the Sugar Plum Tree, the Salvation Army and the Air Force's Operation Christmas Drop to ensure that toys are distributed to needy children and families.

Strides for the Cure
On Saturday, October 9th, the 9th Annual Strides for the Cure 2k & 5k Run/Walk was held in front of the Outrigger Guam Resort in Tumon. This year, organizers awarded the University of Guam , the school with the largest number of registrants, $500 cash to their Student Government Association to be used towards school ground & building improvements.

2010 Math Contest Launched
The University of Guam’s Division of Mathematical Sciences launched their annual math contest today with the first set of problems posted at www.uog.edu/mathematics. The contest will be held each month from November 2010 through March 2011. Winners will be announced each month. Overall winners will be announced in April.  Challenge your mathematical mind and log onto the website to view the problems. Solutions for the November contest are due November 30, 2010. Submit your solution by email to uog_math@yahoo.com. Submissions must include the words “Math Contest” in the subject line of the email. In the body of the email please include your name, mailing address, school, and grade. Underwood Receives Award
University of Guam President Robert A. Underwood received the Higher Education Award from the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund on November 10 for his long-standing commitment to education and efforts to increase access to education for Asian and Pacific Islander American students during the APIASF’s Today’s Minds, Tomorrow’s Future Scholarship Benefit in New York. Underwood was the first chair of the Board of Directors when it began in 2004. It is now the largest scholarship fund serving the Asian & Pacific Islander community.

UOG Island Theatre presents Laundry and Bourbon and Lone Star Nov. 17 - 20
Don't miss the Island Theatre's second production, two hilarious, but biting, portraits of love-lorn men and women tied to the desert and their small-town misfortunes.  The play from Nov. 17-20.  The play features some of the best acting talent on island, with performances by Katherine Cure, Michelle Blas, Michelle Bednarzyk, Will Sullivan, PK Harmon, and James Nichols.  The curtain is always at 8pm.  And UOG students are always free! Creative Hands Exhibit – Nov. 18
Isla Center for the Arts presents Creative Hands: Pacific 2010 exhibit featuring work from 14 artists from the Micronesian region. The opening reception is November 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Isla Center for the Arts, Dean’s Circle, UOG campus.

School of Education Colloquium Series for 2010 – Nov. 18
Micronesian Child Studies on Romonum, Chuuk Lagoon
On November 18, Mary Spencer will present the research she conducted last March on several aspects of cognitive development within cultural context, with school aged children on an island in the Chuuk Lagoon. She will use photographs and data designed to answer research questions on English and Chuukese literacy, everyday home and school activities, and the goals and expectations held by parents, educators, and community leaders about the children’s futures. She links her studies to child development theory and to Micronesian and international research histories. The presentation will be held at 4:00 PM in SBPA Room 259. GLOBAL MILITARISM: GLOBAL PEACE? – Nov. 18

Micronesian Studies: Cancer and Health Disparities Colloquium – Nov. 19 
On November 19th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Science Building SC120, we will be hosting our Micronesian Studies: Cancer and Health Disparities Colloquium.  This will be a Webcast based interactive seminar with our U-54 Counterparts at the CRCH in Hawaii The presenters and topics are: Development of a Breast Cancer Risk Model for the Pacific by Rachael Leon Guerrero; Community-based Participatory Research (CBPR) Methods: A Tool to Address Health Inequalities by Hali Robinett and Kevin Cassel; and Biostatistics by Grazyna Badowski This event is free and open to the public and we encourage all interested parties to attend.

"How to Write a Business Plan" – Nov. 19
Presented by Guam SBDC: This seminar will cover all of the elements to be included in a business plan, & explain with examples what is required in each section. The focus of the seminar will be the three M’s – Money, Management & Marketing. Buy Locally Grown Veggies for Thanksgiving – Nov. 19
The Farmers’ Cooperative Association of Guam and the Dededo Municipal Council, with assistance from the UOG Cooperative Extension Service, will host a Thanksgiving Harvest Friday Night Market on Friday November 19th.  The market will be from 4 pm to 9 pm in front of the old Dededo Fire Station and Post Office. Sweet corn, papayas, eggplant, cucumber, local culinary herbs, and other locally grown produce will be for sale. Core Certification of Vendors Required. Space is free. Career Majors and Minors Fair – Dec. 3
The Career Majors and Minors Fair is scheduled on Friday, December 3, 2010, from 9 am to 6:00 p.m. at the UOG Field House. This event is open to all UOG undergraduates, undeclared majors, and high school seniors. The colleges and schools will feature their various programs.
 
Christmas Drop

SBPA volunteered to serve as a drop off site for the “Toys for Tots” program
Marine Forces Pacific (Fwd) Guam & CNMI is organizing a Toys for Tots campaign to help the children of Guam and CNMI. The School of Business and Public Administration is an official drop off center. To participate you can drop a new, unwrapped toy in the collection box located in the SBPA Dean’s Office. The campaign lasts until December 22 when toys will be distributed to children. MarForPac (Fwd) is working with Catholic Social Services, Alee Shelter, the Sugar Plum Tree, the Salvation Army and the Air Force's Operation Christmas Drop to ensure that toys are distributed to needy children and families.

UOG Presidential lecture series
fEATURES Jon M. Van Dyke, cONSTITUTIONAL LAW SCHOLAR – Nov. 10
University of Guam President Robert A. Underwood hosts the 10th presentation in the Presidential Lecture Series on November 10 featuring Jon M. Van Dyke, constitutional law scholar and professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law. Van Dyke’s presentation, “The Status of Guam and Chamorro People under United States and International Law,” is held in collaboration with the Judiciary of Guam, the District Court of Guam, the Guam Bar Association and the University of Guam . The lecture will be held at 2:00 p.m. on November 10 in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Lecture Hall, the UOG campus. The Presidential Lecture Series featuring Professor Van Dyke is free and open to the public.
MEDICAL MARIJUANA FORUM – Nov. 10
MPA students host a forum live at the Legislative Session Hall entitled Higher Education Going Green in Medicine which focuses on medical marijuana. Doors open at 5:30 and the forum begins at 6:00 p.m. Free.
UOG Island Theatre presents Laundry and Bourbon and Lone Star Nov. 11
Don't miss the Island Theatre's second production, two hilarious, but biting, portraits of love-lorn men and women tied to the desert and their small-town misfortunes. The play opens Nov. 11, and runs through the 13th and the following week from Nov. 17-20. The play features some of the best acting talent on island, with performances by Katherine Cure, Michelle Blas, Michelle Bednarzyk, Will Sullivan, PK Harmon, and James Nichols . School of Education Colloquium Series for 2010 – Nov. 18
Micronesian Child Studies on Romonum, Chuuk Lagoon
On November 18, Mary Spencer will present the research she conducted last March on several aspects of cognitive development within cultural context, with school aged children on an island in the Chuuk Lagoon. She will use photographs and data designed to answer research questions on English and Chuukese literacy, everyday home and school activities, and the goals and expectations held by parents, educators, and community leaders about the children’s futures. She links her studies to child development theory and to Micronesian and international research histories. The presentation will be held at 4:00 PM in SBPA Rm 259. GLOBAL MILITARISM: GLOBAL PEACE? – Nov. 18
The third film in the Global Militarism: Global Peace? documentary film/discussion series for the Fall semester 2010 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, November 18, CLASS Lecture Hall, UOG Campus. This series is co-sponsored by the Division of Social Work and the Communication Program at the University of Guam in cooperation with the Guahan Coalition for Peace and Justice and WeAreGuahan. "How to Start a Business" - Nov. 12
Presented by Guam SBDC. This workshop will help individuals learn everything they will need to get started, including an introduction to business plans and the importance of preparing one; exploring the legal forms of business (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, limited liability partnership / company) and which one is right for your business needs; local or federal licensing requirements for the business. Participants will be able to obtain vital information and resources to start and own a business. WIB CONFERENCE: Thursday, November 18th (8:30am-4:30pm); Hyatt Regency Guam in Tumon: The UOG Guam SBDC/Bank of Guam Women in Business Program presents the Annual Women in Business Conference: Build Your Business Through Export and Microcredit. The goal of this conference will be to provide relevant information by experts in the areas of business planning and management, marketing, legal and regulatory issues, and funding opportunities for small businesses interested in exporting and/or microcredit. "How to Write a Business Plan" – Nov. 19
Presented by Guam SBDC: This seminar will cover all of the elements to be included in a business plan, & explain with examples what is required in each section. The focus of the seminar will be the three M’s – Money, Management & Marketing. Participants will also be provided with a sample business plan, sources of industry research information, and introduced to online business planning tools that are accessible at any time through an internet-enabled PC. GRANTS

UOG AND UMASS-BOSTON PROVIDE PACIFIC VIP MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of Guam Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, & Service (Guam CEDDERS), in partnership with University of Massachusetts - Boston , has been awarded a Personnel Preparation grant from the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, to administer the Pacific Vision Instruction Project (Pacific VIP) Master’s Degree Program. This four-year grant aims to increase the pool of fully credentialed instructional personnel who are highly qualified to educate students who are blind or have visual impairments. Pacific VIP provides scholarships leading to a Master of Education in Special Education degree, plus dual credentials in Teacher of Visual Impairments (TVI) and Orientation and Mobility (O&M). The Pacific VIP Master’s Degree Program will utilize a blended delivery approach of on-line coursework and on-site required class/lab work on Guam , which will be enhanced by integrated field experiences coordinated throughout the academic program. Up to 20 scholarships will be awarded to applicants from American Samoa , Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands , Guam , Federated States of Micronesia , Republic of the Marshall Islands , and Republic of Palau to meet each entity’s responsibility to provide personnel to serve students who are blind or have visual impairments. The University of Guam CEDDERS is now accepting applications to the Pacific VIP Master’s Degree Program. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, DECEMBER 10, 2010. UOG Announces Availability of TEACH Grants
Funds Support Students Seeking Degrees in High-Need Teaching Areas

The University of Guam was recently approved by the U.S. Department of Education to begin providing TEACH grants to its students. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is a federal program that strives to encourage teachers into high-need teaching areas in K-12 schools that serve low-income students, a designation that is met by all of Guam ’s public schools.



The TEACH Grant is a conditional, non-need based grant available for eligible students pursuing a degree in a high need field. TEACH grants are not loans. Up to $4,000 can be awarded per year to full-time students with a cap of $16,000 for undergraduate programs and professional degrees, and $8,000 for graduate programs. Recipients must have a grade point average of 3.25 and agree to teach for four years in a public school that serves low income students.



UOG Receives National Geographic Society Grant

The University of Guam ’s Micronesian Area Research Center received a $15K grant from the National Geographic Society / Waitt Grants Program to conduct archaeological and paleoenvironmental investigations at Marigondon Cave , located in Cebu , Philippines .
