UOG Alumni at the 44th NABE Conference

Pictured L-R:  UOG Alumni Professor Rosa Salas Palomo and Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera take a pose at Paris, Bally's Las Vegas during the 44th Annual National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference.  The theme of the conference is Achieving Global Competence:  Biliteracy for All!  The pre-conference started March 4 and the rest of the conference will continue until March 7, 2015.  Palomo is scheduled to chair the Asia Pacific Special Interest Group, and Dr. Rivera will be sharing her presentation titled Creatively Using Digital Storytelling to Scaffold Literacy in the ESL Classroom.

The National Association for Bilingual Education is the only nationwide network of professionals dedicated to serving English language learners in the United States via education programs and legislative advocacy. For the past four decades, NABE has been committed to excellence in bilingual and biliteracy education for all students through enriched educational programs and intensive professional development for teachers, administrators, professors, policymakers and parents. Additionally, NABE provides extensive research in the field via its Bilingual Research Journal, NABE Perspectives, NABE Journal of Research and Practice and the NABE eNews. NABE is committed to promoting programs and innovations that prepare our nation's students to be fluently bilingual, technologically creative, globally competitive and well-rounded world citizens by advancing legislation and policies at both the state and national levels that best serve language minority students.

UOG Faculty Development Day a Success

The 3rd Annual University of Guam President's Cup begins on February 16! This year, your team of 10 will compete in TEN grueling events that will push you to the limit! 3v3 Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Ping Pong, Tug of War, Dodgeball, Enhanced Skills Trainer, Golf, 5K Run/Walk and a top secret Wild Card event!

The cost is $5 per person ($50 per team of TEN players)

  1. Download attached registration form.
  2. Put together a coed team of 10 (minimum of two females per team).
  3. Sign up and Pay Entry Fee ($50 per team) at the President's Office, 2nd Floor, Leon Guerrero School of Business & Public Administration.
  4. REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT 4PM!  SIGN UP TODAY!
  5. Team Captain's Meeting will be held at 2pm on February 13, Calvo Field House.

Established in 1952 as the Territorial College of Guam, the institution was renamed the University of Guam in 1968. In 2015, we celebrate our 47th Charter Day and our 63rd year as an institution of higher education.
Tuesday, 3/10, 8:30a.m. to 4p.m. The schedule of events for Charter Day 2015 is being finalized, in the meantime, you can review information from last year to give you an idea of what to expect for this year:

2)UNIVERSITY OF GUAM ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, 2015-2016 ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The UOG Alumni Association is looking for interested candidates to fill three positions in the organization. Individuals must have earned their undergraduate or graduate degree(s) from the University to qualify for office. Candidates should have proven leadership experience, are able to communicate and work with a large group, possess great organizational skills, are results-driven, and are motivated towards continuing efforts to foster fraternity and support for the University. Prior community or group volunteer experiences are a plus for all positions. For the position of Treasurer, it is recommended that the individual have professional experience in finance. 

Responsibilities for each position are as follows:

Vice President/President-Elect
The Vice President/President Elect acts in the place of the President in his or her absence or disability. The Vice President/President-Elect shall become the Incoming President in the following term. (The President is the chief executive officer of the Association and shall have the general supervision, direction and control of the business and officers of the Association.

Secretary
The Secretary shall keep, or cause to be kept, a book of minutes at the principal office or such other place as the Executive Committee may order, of all meetings of the Association. The Secretary shall give, or cause to be given place of all the meetings of the Association required by the By-Laws to be given and shall keep a list of the members and the seal of the Association in safe custody, and shall have such other powers and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the By-Laws.

Treasurer
The Treasurer shall keep and maintain, or cause to be kept and maintained, adequate and correct accounts of the properties and business transactions of the corporation, including accounts of its assets, liabilities, receipts, disbursements, gains, losses, capital, surplus and shares. Any surplus, including earned surplus, shall be classified according to source and shown in a separate account. The books of account shall at all reasonable times be open to inspection by any active member. The Treasurer shall deposit all money and other valuables in the name and to the credit of the Association with such depositories as may be designated by the Executive Committee. He/she shall disburse the funds of the Association as may be ordered by the Executive Committee, shall render to the Executive Committee, whenever they request it, an account of all transactions and of the financial conditions of the Association and shall have such other powers and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the By-Laws. A petty cash fund may be established upon approval of the Executive Committee. Treasurer shall coordinate with the established financial accounting firm, tax preparer or other established persons to prepare and reconcile monthly and yearly financial records and reports them to the Executive Committee accordingly.

The term of office for all positions is one year. Current President-Elect Chelo Paulino will become President. Current President, Star Mercado will serve as Immediate Past President.

The deadline to file for candidacy is Friday, February 27th through UOG Alumni Association President, Star Mercado via email,uogalumniassociation@gmail.com or through Norman Analista, Dir. Development and Alumni Affairs, UOG, nanalista@uguam.uog.edu

Candidates must submit a written statement that explains what position they are pursuing as well as their bio-data to be posted on the uogalumni.org for other alumni to view prior to voting.
