1)SCHOOL OF EDUCATION NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH AND 60th ANNIVERSARY KICKOFF – TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

Attention all alumni – this is a great opportunity to reconnect with your former classmates and the campus community! The New Year’s Eve Bash will celebrate 60 years of teacher education on Guam and will include dinner, entertainment, raffle prizes, and a champagne toast at midnight.

Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the Hotel Nikko Guam. Early bird ticket prices are $60 per couple, $35 individual, and $15 for children. Get your tickets at the SOE Dean’s Office or call 735-2440.

The Isla Center for the Arts Presents: The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture  Exhibition through January 13, 2012
The exhibit features 80 small-scale sculptures from around the world that are no larger than the size of an ordinary shoebox. The exhibit has attracted a large number of well-known artists from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, Australia, Canada, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Norway, People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, The Netherlands, and United Kingdom. The exhibit runs December 7, 2011 – January 13, 2012. The public is invited to the opening reception on Wednesday, December 7, from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Isla Center for the Arts located on the UOG campus, #15 Dean’s Circle, Mangilao. The Center is open Monday – Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am – 2:00pm. Closed Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.  Donations are greatly appreciated.

Educational Talent Search
The University of Guam's Educational Talent Search Program (ETS) is a college prep program that seeks to enhance the educational opportunities of middle and high schools students. Applications are currently being accepted for 9th - 12th graders attending any of the Guam Public High Schools. Scholars and students that have been engaged in scholarly work in all disciplines are invited to participate in this UOG 60th anniversary Charter Day event on March 13, 2012.  Presentations of papers, exhibits, panels, forums, workshops and performances are all welcome.  The Conference Committee solicits proposals from faculty, undergraduate and graduate Students in any discipline. Papers are limited to: 20 minutes for presentation; 5 minutes for discussion; An abstract of no more than 150 words. Are you interested in getting an advanced college degree in the area of childhood wellness? Can you conduct research on childhood obesity? Do you have a strong commitment to reside and work in your home country after graduation working on childhood obesity prevention? Are you a resident of the Guam and a US citizen, or US National, or US green-card holder? If so, the Children’s Healthy Living Program (CHL) is looking for a few dedicated students for a full scholarship starting in 2012. There are a number of educational options and schools (listed below). Application deadline is December 30, 2011. The Herminia Dierking Scholarship is Now Available!
DEADLINE: January 31, 2012

The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) Guam Chapter is pleased to offer the Herminia Dierking Scholarship. The scholarship is sponsored and funded jointly by the chapter and private sector contributors in recognition of the achievements of the late Herminia H. Dierking, a Legislator, Educator, Humanitarian, Past President of AGA Guam Chapter, Past Regional Vice President of AGA Pacific Rim and a past recipient of the AGA National Chapter Service Award.

The scholarship provides a total of $6,000 in scholarship funds to four (4) undergraduate students ($1,500 for each recipient, two recipients for Spring 2012 and two recipients for Fall 2012 semesters) at the University of Guam (UOG) who exhibits academic excellence in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance and Economics or Public Administration disciplines. Scholarships for Advanced Degrees in Nutrition of Public Health
Individuals looking to earn a masters or doctoral degree in nutrition or public health nutrition have the opportunity with scholarships awarded by the University of Guam Children’s Healthy Living Program (CHL) Training Program. UOG Graduates 221 Students

The University of Guam graduated 221 students during the Fall 2011 commencement ceremony held December 18, 2011. The number of graduates is an 11-percent increase compared to the number of students a year ago. BIBA UOG!

1)SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR TO VISIT UOG JAN. 27 – SEATS STILL AVAILABLE!
 
The District Court of Guam and the Guam Bar Association announce a visit by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to Guam and the CNMI. Justice Sotomayor will host a Conversatorio (Conversation in Spanish) on January 27, from 11 am to 12:30 p.m. at the University of Guam Field House.
 
Justice Sotomayor is the Supreme Court’s 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice and its third female justice. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
 
We have space for 100 University of Guam alumni to attend this event. In order to attend, you must send your name to me at nanalista@uguam.uog.edu by next week Thursday, December 15, 2011. Planetarium Shows – Dec. 9, 10, 11
Pam Eastlick presents The Star on December 9, 10 and 11. The Star is an examination of some of the theories proposed by astronomers about what the star of Bethlehem might have been.  Was it a comet?  A supernova?  A conjunction of two or more planets?  She will examine all these theories and more in The Star. Sky Legends 18 will be presented at 6:30 and The Star at 7:00pm.

UOG MATH CONTEST FOR DECEMBER
The Division of Mathematical Sciences hosts their Math Contest each month through March 2012. The December problems are posted at www.uog.edu/mathematics. Participants must submit their solutions by December 31, 2011.The winners for the month of November include Yibei Li and Sean Lee from Stevenson School, CA; Kevin Cho and John Kim from Harvest Christian Academy; Peter Leng, St. John's; and Jessie Beaver from UOG. The winners and the solutions to the November problems are posted at www.uog.edu/mathematics. Submit your solutions to the the December problems by email to uog_math@yahoo.com. Submit Your Creative Works to Storyboard – Deadline Dec. 8
The University of Guam’s Division of English and Applied Linguistics seeks submissions for its literary journal, Storyboard. Writers and artists from Guam and the greater Pacific are encouraged to submit their work for journal’s twelfth issue, which will focus on the theme, “Crossings.” All submissions must be emailed to storyboardjournal@gmail.com on or before midnight, December 8, 2011. The Soroptomist International of the Marianas
DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15, 2011
The Soroptomist International of the Marianas (SIM) is sponsoring a scholarship for University of Guam undergraduates who are permanent residents of Guam and are entering or are enrolled at UOG, from freshman through senior levels.  To maintain eligibility for the scholarship, recipient must be a full-time student, maintaining academic progress toward a degree, with a GPA of 3.0.  Students must show evidence of financial need. This is to be determined by the Financial Aid Office of the University of Guam. The Financial Aid Office will make an analysis of the family’s financial strength. Society of American Military Engineers Guam Post
Application Deadline: December 16, 2011 by 5:00 p.m.
 
 The Guam Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is currently accepting applications for its 2011/2012 Mid‐Year Charlie Corn Scholarship. Enclosed is a copy of the application form and a background sheet describing the scholarship and its eligibility and application requirements. As described in the background sheet, the Charlie Corn Scholarship is to assist in the development of engineering and architectural talent in Guam and Micronesia. Refer to the scholarship application to confirm eligibility requirements. After graduation, applicants must be planning on returning to Guam or Micronesia to begin their professional career.
