Virtual UOG Distinguished Alumni Awards Unforgettable - Nov. 5

The UOG Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony held November 5, 2020 via Zoom was memorable! Due to COVID-19 and PCOR1 restrictions, the event was held online and brought together over 200 participants to reconnect with fellow UOG alumni and honor 6 Distinguished UOG Alumni.  Honorable guests in attendance included Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio, Congressman Michael San Nicolas, and Sen. Amanda Shelton.  JEJ Vinson, a finalist on NBC's "The Voice" and our very own UOG Latte Tones sang for the special event.  The late Dr. Suzanne Bells was also remembered during the ceremony.

The Last Mile Scholarship was further announced during the event.  It launched in October to coincide with the reunion.  It is a competitive scholarship awarded to students who are within 30 credits of completing their first bachelor's degree and in need of financial assistance.  More than $14,000 were raised through the support of corporate sponsors and UOG alumni.

UOG Telethon for COVID Relief raises $43,000

The University of Guam raised $43,000 from more than 327 donors last night through a telethon fundraiser to support emergency medical personnel responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The total more than doubled the original goal of $20,000. The fundraising event streamed live for two hours on the university’s Facebook page and had been accepting donations in the weeks prior.

The money raised will go directly toward the purchase of meals, face masks and shields, hand sanitizer, gloves, and other equipment and supplies for health care workers in Guam.  The telethon featured content experts from the UOG community sharing tips to help residents weather the coronavirus public health emergency. The topics included handling stress and anxiety, cooking healthy meals at home and grocery shopping on a budget, home fitness activities, home gardening, and others.

The event also included surprise musical performances by UOG students and alumni, including the UOG Latte Tones, Joe Guam, and Coco and the Way Cool Heroes.  The educational video segments and the recording of the telethon can still be viewed on the university’s Facebook page: facebook.com/UniversityofGuam. Donations can continue to be made through the UOG Endowment Foundation's website.  The event was sponsored by IT&E, KUAM Careforce, and LSG Sky Chefs with program sponsorship from Docomo Pacific, The Guam Daily Post, and Blue Pacific Realty.
