Thanksgiving Donations to Alee Shelter

ACEI officers and members visited Alee Shelter on November 23, 2010 to present children and staff with many boxes of Thanksgiving donations. Alee Shelter protects abused or neglected children. The Thanksgiving donation is one of the many significant civic and community events the UOG-ACEI student organization supports annually.

TEACH GRANT AND YEC INFO SESSION – Dec. 7
The School of Education and the Financial Aid Office host an information session on both the TEACH grant program and the YEC program and how residents may use these grants to fund their educations as they pursue their teaching degrees. The session will be held today at 4:00 p.m. in the Anthony Leon Guerrero Multipurpose Room, SBPA.

Faculty Book Launch – Dec. 9
On Thursday, December 9, 2010, CLASS will sponsor a Book Launch for several recently published faculty a6 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS Professional Development Room, Dean’s Office, HSS 3rd Floor. The launch will include presentations from the faculty including Jason Vest, Helen Thompson, David Atienza, Randall Johnson, and PK Harmon. A reception will follow. The United States Secret Service Virtual Info Session at UOG –Dec. 10
The University of Guam Career Development Office will host a virtual information session and employer presentation by the United States Secret Service (USSS) on the UOG campus on December 10, 2010.  The United States Secret Service is looking to fill positions for special agent, uniformed division officer, special officer, administrative, and professional and technical support positions. Representatives from the US Secret Service will conduct the session and explain the mission, career, and employment process. The sessions will be held on the following dates:

TAKE CONSUMER CONFIDENCE SURVEY by Dec. 18
The University of Guam-Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives (UOG-PCEI) is conducting its fourth semi-annual survey to find out how Guam consumers assess current and future business and economic climate on Guam. Voluntary participation is appreciated. You will be asked to complete one survey instrument and will take approximately 5 minutes. The consumer survey consists of 11 questions. Questions are rated on a Likert Scale. In addition, you will be asked questions pertaining to gender, age, ethnicity, household income, household size, and employment. This survey is part of a series of projects designed to begin and maintain updated and reliable data that will be useful for planning by policymakers, businesses and the local community. Planetarium Shows – Dec. 9, 10 and 11
So join us on 9, 10 and 11 December at 6:30 p.m. when we'll present "Sky Legends of the World 18", the show where little kids tell us stories about the sky.  Plan to stay for the 7:00 p.m. show where you'll hear the greatest story ever told.  Every December we have "The Star," the Planetarium Christmas show. "The Star" is a look at what scientists think the Star of Bethlehem might have been.  The show begins with a reading of the Christmas story.  Don't miss this wonderful show!!

Western Pacific Coral Institute
The Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute (WPCRI) is a cooperative agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research and the University of Guam (UOG).  The institute’s primary goal is to protect and preserve the nation’s coral reefs through multidisciplinary basic and applied scientific ecosystem research that is directly applicable to management, as well as via training and education.   WPCRI is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships to resident students wishing to study at UOG.  These scholarships will present opportunities to combine sociocultural and traditional ecological knowledge with technical and scientific perspectives that will foster a stronger interest in natural resource management among local indigenous and other minority groups within the region.  WPCRI anticipates issuing 7 scholarships based on a 16-credit semester to five (5) undergraduate and two (2) graduate students to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books in the amount of up to $4,228 for undergraduate and $5,376 for graduate programs based on the availability of funds.   Visit the UOG Financial Aid website at  http://www.uog.edu/financialaid to download the application or go to the Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute Website at http://www.uog.edu/wpcri for more information

Dr. Corbin will present, "Recent Developments in Small Island Governance: Implications for the Self-Determination Process" on November 30 at 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS Lecture Hall. Dr. Corbin is a United Nations advisor and expert on political self-determination. The event is free and open to the public. University of Guam Cancer Research Center and Cancer Research Center of Hawaii Present a Community Research Update - Dec. 2
The UOG Cancer Research Center and the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii will present updates on various research projects on Dec. 2 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the CLASS lecture hall. Project updates include the Cancer Registry; the Development of Protocols for Studying Oral Precancerous Lesions and Other Health Risks Among Betel Nut Users in Micronesia; Development of a Breast Cancer Risk Model of the Pacific; Community Outreach to Reduce Health Disparities (Youth Tobacco Use) Among Pacific Islanders Living in Guam; and an overview and update on the Cancer Center partnership between UOG and the University of Hawaii. This event is funded by a National Institutes of Health Cancer Institute Grant.

University Music presents “Winter Wonderland” - Dec. 2 and 3
University Music will present “Winter Wonderland” Family Holiday Concerts on December 2-3 at 7:00pm at the UOG Fine Arts Theater. The University Singers and the UOG Jazz Ensemble will perform holiday favorites. The concerts will be visited by Frosty the Snowman, the Grinch and Santa himself! Admission is $7.00 adult and $5.00 for children and students. UOG students are free with UOG student ID card. On Thursday night, December 2, the whole family can get in for $20!

Career Majors and Minors Fair – Dec. 3

The Career Majors and Minors Fair is scheduled on Friday, December 3, 2010, from 9 am to 6:00 p.m. at the UOG Field House. This event is open to all UOG undergraduates, undeclared majors, and high school seniors. The colleges and schools will feature their various programs.

Business Woman of the Year Scholarships

Roselyn Carino, Suzanne Bernardo, Lisiel Ignacio, and Eileen Calleja received scholarships ranging $2,280 to $2,850 from First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Magazine on Nov. 26. Funds for the scholarships were raised during the annual Business Woman of the Year event.



FACULTY IN ACTION

Dr. Mary Fegurgur
Dr. Mary Fegurgur, Principal Investigator for Guam’s Family Support 360 for Military Families Project, which is one of the Administration on Developmental Disabilities initial four projects funded to serve military families who have children with disabilities was recently asked to lead a national “360 Exchange” webinar on September 23. This 360 Exchange Webinar included the development of a presentation and overview of outcome research currently being conducted on Guam in the area of Military Family Supports. Project staff from around the nation, families, and federal officials called in and logged on to be able to view slides and learn from how Guam’s 360 has utilized the Parent Stress Index as a tool for assessing baseline, for identifying areas to be included in family support plans, and to measure impact and outcomes of the project.

TODAY’S EVENTS

“ONE - The Movie” – Nov. 22
The University of Guam ’s Sociology of Religion Class will host a free screening of the internationally acclaimed and award winning documentary film, "ONE - The Movie" on November 22 at 6:00 p.m. in the CLASS lecture hall. Dr. Kirk Johnson, professor of sociology at the University of Guam , tasked his students this semester to consider what they might do as students studying religion and society for the Guam community. They decided to screen a film that captures humanity's journey throughout the ages. The film ONE is a documentary that was created to increase awareness of the interconnectedness of all people and cultures around the world. The screening, which coincides with the celebrations of the 10th Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Guam , is free of charge and open to the public.

STUDENTS IN ACTION



Nursing Students and graduates participate in Homeless Outreach
On Nov. 17, student nurses assisted in providing immunizations and registration for the homeless during the Passport to Health and Employment Services outreach held in conjunction with the opening of The People’s Garden by the First Lady and the HOPE Foundation. Nursing students also went out to the unsheltered homeless in Hagatna and Tamuning. The students, along with Margaret Hattori and several GMH nurses who are UOG graduates, visited homeless and provided shoes and clothing.

Sociology Students Wash Cars for Habitat for Humanity
On Nov. 20 Sociology students held a car wash fundraiser in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Criminal Justice Students Win Co-Ed Division in Inafamaolek Bed Race
JJ Construction and Joey Lopez sponsored UOG Criminal Justice majors who won first place in the co-ed division in a charity event for Inafamaolek.

Vega Deputy U.S. Marshal
John Vega a May 2010 UOG graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice was sworn in as a Deputy US Marshal on Nov. 9.

Professor Jon M. Van Dyke, constitutional law scholar and professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law, presented “The Status of Guam and Chamorro People under United States and International Law,” on Nov. 10, 2010. His presentation has been posted on YouTube. SBPA volunteered to serve as a drop off site for the “Toys for Tots” program
Marine Forces Pacific (Fwd) Guam & CNMI is organizing a Toys for Tots campaign to help the children of Guam and CNMI. The School of Business and Public Administration is an official drop off center. To participate you can drop a new, unwrapped toy in the collection box located in the SBPA Dean’s Office. The campaign lasts until December 22 when toys will be distributed to children. MarForPac (Fwd) is working with Catholic Social Services, Alee Shelter, the Sugar Plum Tree, the Salvation Army and the Air Force's Operation Christmas Drop to ensure that toys are distributed to needy children and families.

Strides for the Cure
On Saturday, October 9th, the 9th Annual Strides for the Cure 2k & 5k Run/Walk was held in front of the Outrigger Guam Resort in Tumon. This year, organizers awarded the University of Guam , the school with the largest number of registrants, $500 cash to their Student Government Association to be used towards school ground & building improvements.
