UOG Spring Enrollment up 3.9%
Highest Spring Enrollment in 10 Years
The University of Guam welcomes 3,424 students to campus for the spring 2010 semester, a 3.9% increase over the prior year and the highest spring enrollment in ten years. Of the 3,424 students enrolled for spring, 60% are female and 40% are male, showing a slight increase in the number of male students attending the institution.
2009 Nursing Grads Earn 94% Pass Rate on NCLEX-RN
Good news for the University of Guam ’s Nursing program as graduates who completed their studies in 2009 and took the national licensing examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) earned a 94% pass rate. The 2009 national average is 89%.

Planetarium Shows
Public shows are February 11, 12 and 13 at 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. Pam Eastlick is presenting “Letters Home: The Diary of the NEAR Spacecraft.”The story of her construction and launch will be presented at 6:30 p.m. The story of her amazing trials, her successful mission and what ultimately happened to her will be presented at 7:00 p.m. This is a marvelous show for the whole family with lots of pictures and an enchanting story. Letters Home will be shown this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11, 12 and 13 February at 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. The doors open at 6:00 p.m., the shows are free and best of all the Planetarium air conditioner is FIXED.

The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam presents The UOG Fine Arts Faculty Biennial beginning Feb. 4. The exhibit includes recent works created by the fine arts faculty \members at the University of Guam . Full-time professors Jose Babauta, Lewis Rifkowitz, Ric R. Castro as well as adjunct instructors Janny L. Cann, Victor Consaga, and Perry Perez are featured in this display that includes drawings, paintings, ceramic vessels, sculptures, as well as mixed media works. The exhibit will be open February 4, 2010 – February 26, 2010.

American Studies Association of Japan To Hold Annual Research Conference at UOG in March
The American Studies Association of Japan, one of the largest academic associations for "Americanists" in Japan , will hold its annual research conference outside of Japan . The University of Guam will be the venue for the 2010 conference which will be held March 20 and 21. Approximately 20-35 researchers will convene at the University to present results of research on a wide variety of aspects of American studies, including U.S. culture, politics, foreign policy, language, and education. The keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Koki Kobayashi, Member, House of Representatives of Japan. He is a senior member of the Japanese parliament and one of the senior leaders of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) which took control of the Japanese government last fall. "One reason for the selection of Guam as the first meeting of the association outside of Japan is the growing interest in the realignment of U.S. military forces in the western Pacific among Japanese Americanists and JDP political leaders," said Michael Stoil, assistant professor of political science at UOG.

Call for Entries: The UOG Women and Gender Studies program is looking for artists to participate in this unique poster contest. The winning posters will be used to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects for women and girls in Guam public schools as well as UOG and GCC.
The competition is open to girls and women in public middle schools and high schools in Guam as well as freshman and sophomore women enrolled at GCC or UOG. The poster design should focus on the positive aspects of STEM subjects for girls and women. Designs might include facts and myths regarding women and girls in STEM fields, foreground local women working in STEM professions, images of girls doing science and having fun and/or the benefits for girls and women who enroll in STEM subjects. UOG’s Island Theatre Federica Garcia Lorca’s classic Spanish tragedy THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA
The play features UOG’s own Michelle Blas and Michelle Bednarzyk, as well as, student Antoinette Brillantes. The play runs from March 4-6 and March 10-13 at the Fine Arts Theatre beginning each night at 8:00pm.
UOG Chemistry Titration Competition 2010
The Chemistry Program at the Division of Natural Sciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, UOG is organizing its annual Titration Competition for High Schools on March, 9th 2010. The competition will be held at the chemistry laboratory located in the second floor (SC 230) of the Science Building at UOG campus. All the high schools in Guam are invited to participate in this event. Each school will be allowed to send one team. Additional teams from the same school will be considered if space permits. To register, students must complete the application form that is posted on the UOG web site www.uog.edu/chemistry_competition

HANKUK UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STUDY ENGLISH AT UOG
College students from Seoul 's Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) will begin a 10-day English language program today at the University of Guam . Today’s group of 50 students marks the second group to study English at UOG in 2010. The first group completed their program on January 28. Hankuk students will hone their English listening and speaking skills both in and out of the classroom, mingling with local college students and the island population in general, as part of a program designed to provide students with memorable and purposeful language learning experiences not available in their native land. The exhibit includes recent works created by the fine arts faculty \members at the University of Guam . Full-time professors Jose Babauta, Lewis Rifkowitz, Ric R. Cann, Victor Consaga, and Perry Perez are featured in this display that includes drawings, paintings, ceramic vessels, sculptures, as well as mixed media works. Former president of Beijing University Xu Zhihong will give a presentation on Friday at 2:00 in the IT&E Lecture Hall, School of Business and Public Administration Building entitled “ China 's Higher Education and Today's Beijing University ”.The presentation is thirty minutes long. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation. He will tour the campus and make a stop at the Tan Siu Lin Building , which houses the UOG library. His visit is meant to stimulate interest in the exchange of cultural and educational opportunities for students. He is hosted by Guam Chinese Association.

Remembering the Dream Poster Contest Winners on Display in Library
The UOG Library lobby hosts Dr. Marilyn Jackson's outstanding exhibit of "Remembering the Dream" Poster Contest winners, and Dr. Jackson's own display of memorabilia examining the life and work of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the late Coretta Scott King. Included are special tributes to the late Rosa Parks, the late Michael Jackson, and President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. The display has multiple tie-ins to many course curricula and we hope that many University of Guam students and professors make time to peruse it. The exhibit will remain up through February.

The University of Guam-Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives (UOG-PCEI) is conducting a survey of shopping on military bases on Guam to better understand consumers on Guam and their preference for shopping at military bases vs. off-base stores, and to estimate the economic impact of consumer behavior on Guam . MARC Documents Available on Guampedia
The University of Guam Micronesian Area Research Center and Guampedia have collaborated to post a series of MARC documents on the Guampedia website, an online encyclopedic resource about the history, culture and contemporary issues of Guam .
Several issues of the Guam Recorder from the early 70s and seven lectures given by UOG President Robert A. Underwood have been posted, and are the first of many MARC documents to be shared with a worldwide audience over the web. “This partnership with Guampedia allows people to easily access these specific MARC documents, and we plan to have many more available in the future,” said Dr. John Peterson, Director of the Micronesian Area Research Center . The documents can be found at http://guampedia.com/category/marc-publications.

AAUW Awards Campus Action Project Grant to UOG Women and Gender Studies Program
The UOG Women and Gender Studies program has been awarded a 2009–10 $5000 Campus Action Project (CAP) grant from the American Association for University Women for Portrait of a Scientist as a Young Woman, which will break through the barriers to entering and staying in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields faced by women and girls. This is the third time the Women and Gender Studies program has been awarded an AAUW grant. AAUW picked just 12 teams from around the country to implement projects. The selected projects focus on mentoring and on exposing some of the barriers that girls experience in math and science, as well as on networking and professional development to retain college women in math, science, engineering, and technology fields. Projects also aim to raise awareness about women in these fields through initiatives such as documentary filmmaking and a poster contest.
UOG Lab Features New Scanning Electron Microscope
University of Guam biology students now have the opportunity to view a cell magnified at a maximum of 24,000 times thanks to a new $65K scanning electron microscope funded through the National Institutes of Health Research Initiatives for Scientific Enhancement.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Island-wide Poster Contest & Michael Jackson Look-a-Like Dance Contest
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Island-wide Poster Contest & Michael Jackson Look-a-Like Dance Contest: The University of Guam School of Education student organization, Association for Childhood Education International (UOG-ACEI) in conjuction with the UOG Student Government Association is sponsoring a Michael Jackson Look-a-Like Dance Contest on January 18 at the Micronesia Mall. The contest will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Registration is $5.00 at the mall between 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The UOG-ACEI is also sponsoring the anuual island-wide poster contest in recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration. The contest theme is Remembering the Dream. It is open to all public, private, and DODEA school children in K-12 grades. The announcement of the winner will be held at the Micronesia Mall on January 18 between 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. The poster display will remain at the mall's center court from January 15 to 21.
The Martin Luther King, Jr., Art Exhibit, entitled, Remember the Dream by Marilyn Malloy Jackson, a UOG Professor, will travel this year to the CNMI. The Art Exhibit will be held at the American Memorial Park Visitor's Center in Saipan.

UOG Math Contest for January 2010
The UOG Math Contest is back! Beginning in January 2010, the UOG Math Department offers a series of monthly contests through March. January’s problems are available online at www.uog.edu/mathematics.
All UOG General Education English Courses Online
The University of Guam ’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences now offers all general education course requirements in English to online learners. EN 210 Introduction to Literature will be offered online for the first time in Spring 2010. For more information visit: www.uog.edu/online_english_courses.

UOG Planetarium Shows – Jan. 14, 15, 16
Public shows are “Winter Skies” at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 14, 15, and 16. In this show, you’ll discover all the bright stars and famous constellations of Guam ’s winter skies and learn some new ones as well. Winter skies are the best star-gazing skies of the year because they usually have the fewest clouds. At 7:00 p.m. we’ll have “Quality Time with the Star Lady”. Jupiter is that really bright star in the western sky after sunset and Mars will officially enter the early evening sky later this month. If you’d like to see it now, just go out around 8:30 and face east, opposite where the Sun disappeared. That really bright red star close to the horizon isn’t a star. It’s Mars.
Web Traffic for the Month of December
Web traffic for the month of December: 3M hits and 62,800 sessions (unique computers). The record is the Oct. 2009 number of 65,000 sessions. Dec. 2008 numbers were: 2.6M hits and 44,000 sessions. You can see from these numbers that traffic has increased greatly over the course of one year. Therefore, make sure the information on your pages is correct.
CLASS is to be commended for great improvement on many of their pages and the creation of new ones, and the CNAS Math Department for keeping their pages current.

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Guam invites submissions for the 31st annual Research Conference on Charter Day, March 9, 2010. The theme is "Visions Beyond the Horizon: Transformation in the Pacific." Proposals for panels, workshops, roundtables, forums, performances and paper presentations are welcome. University of Guam senior John Vega is the first U.S. Marshals Service Centralized Student Career Experience Program (CSCEP) intern selected to serve in the District of Guam.
PUBLICATION AND RECOGNITION
Dr. Fred Schumann and Char Amado (FA'09 grad) have published an article in the South Asian Journal of Tourism & Heritage. The name of the article is Japanese Overseas Weddings in Guam: A Case Study of Guam's First Hotel Wedding Chapel. This can be found online at: www.sajth.com.
An article on the National Center for Environmental Research website focuses on Dr. Alex Kerr’s work. The article is entitled: Coral Reef Biodiversity as a Management Tool, and can be viewed at this link: http://www.epa.gov/ncer/
Cathleen Moore-Linn’s short story, The Christmas Drop, read by Hawaii actor Misu Tupuo aired on Hawaii Public Radio’s Aloha Shorts program on Dec. 15.
