SBPA Recognition & Awards Ceremony – Dec. 18
The SBPA Graduates Recognition and Awards Ceremony will be held Friday, December 18, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., in the IT&E Lecture Hall, Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero Business and Public Administration Building , UOG Campus. Lunch will be provided immediately afterward the ceremony.

Planetarium – Dec. 10, 11 and 12

The Planetarium will host its December shows Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10, 11 and 12 December at 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. The 6:30 show will be 'The Star', the Planetarium Christmas show and the 7:00 show will be one of the ‘pretty picture shows’.

“Fighting the Battle Against Poverty & Malnutrition: By Diversifying with Fruit and Vegetables” – Nov. 30
Dr J.D.H. Keatinge, Director General of AVDRC-the World vegetable Center, will present a seminar entitled “Fighting the Battle Against Poverty & Malnutrition: By Diversifying with Fruit and Vegetables” on Monday, 30 November 2009 in ALS 127 at 4 PM. Please contact Ross Miller for more information, and if you wish, to schedule a meeting with Dr. Keatinge, who is an agronomist with a Doctorate in Agriculture from Queen’s University, Belfast , Northern Ireland and is Visiting Professor of Tropical Agriculture at the University of Reading, UK. He has global expertise in crop agronomy having worked at ICARDA in Syria , Pakistan and Turkey , IITA in Nigeria and Cameroon and ICRISAT in India and several countries in sub-Saharan Africa . He was also Professor of Agricultural Systems and Management at Reading University for much of the 1990s and claims to have worked professionally in every continent on earth except Antartica! Presently, he is Director General of AVRDC – The World Vegetable Research and Development Center based in Taiwan .

CEDDERS Seeking Evaluators
Guam CEDDERS wishes to establish a list of individual (s) or organization (s) interested in conducting evaluations for the University of Guam , Center of Excellence on Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (CEDDERS) for various projects within the organization. Payment for services will be through contractual agreement. Evaluations may include on-site visits, interviews, and/or surveying of individuals involved in the projects as well as a review of project documents. Interested individuals and/or organizations should submit vita as well as letter of introduction/interest outlining experiences in conducting formative and summative project evaluations to Ms. Julie Celeste at Deans Circle House #11 or e-mail her at Julie.celeste@guamcedders.org.

The Dolls of Japan : Shapes of Prayer, Embodiments of Love – through Jan. 8, 2010
The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam presents The Dolls of Japan : Shapes of Prayer, Embodiments of Love through January 8, 2010. As stated in the exhibition catalog, “In Japan, dolls have been a part of everyday life since ancient times. Japanese dolls reflect the customs of Japan and the aspirations of its people, possess distinctive regional attributes, and over the centuries have developed in many diverse forms. Dolls also provide a showcase for traditional Japanese craft products, such as textiles.” The Isla Center for the Arts is open to the public, free of charge, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Groups are cordially invited to call the Isla Center at 735-2965/6 to schedule tours of the exhibit.

Language Arts Conference a Success!

The University of Guam's 22^nd Annual Regional Language Arts Conference (LAC), which was held Friday and Saturday, November 6 & 7, 2009 at UOG and the Guam Marriott Resort and Spa was a success! The theme of the conference was "Multicultural Approaches in Language Arts Education." The LAC is an opportunity for professional growth and enrichment in literacy for educators in the Western Pacific region. Presentations focused on reading and writing across the content areas with particular attention on approaches in the multicultural context. Thus, it offered workshops and presentations that promote creative multicultural approaches to language arts, technology, assessment, literacy, and more!

The participants were treated to insightful speeches conducted by Keynote Speakers Drs. Nancy Updegraff and Nancy Hayward. Updegraff, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Special Consultant, proudly holds three doctorate degrees and eight master's degrees in the areas of Urban Education, English, Learning Disabilities, Reading Psychology, and Professional Development. Hayward is Professor of English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and on the faculty in the Composition and TESOL Graduate programs. Her professional expertise includes composition theory and practice, multiculturalism, and sociolinguistics.
